About Tafal
Tafal is a collaborative project between ŻfinMalta and Valletta2018, whereby maritime memories documented during Qatt ma Ninsa 2014 are re-told by contemporary choreographers and dancers. Re-tellings were filmed and produced by Cedric Vella of Hangar.
Qatt ma Ninsa was a successful storytelling experience in which different people brought various objects and explained these objects’ stories, at the Maritime Museum in Birgu.
Each of the five short films which form the Tafal series, recreate the objects’ narrative. Every object tells its own story which evokes its own mood, and thus, choreography and filming locations change depending on the particular object.
Tafal is part of the Cultural Programme being developed in the journey to Valletta hosting the European Capital of Culture in 2018. Valletta 2018 believes in the formation of a strong national dance company and in the strength of interdisciplinary work using new technology.
Stories and narratives are integral to the building of a national identity which can be reshaped through art and new media.
